Workshop

Workshop
Overview

The Mechanical Workshop plays a vital role in supporting research, development, maintenance and experimental activities by providing precision machining, fabrication, assembly, repair and manufacturing services. The workshop is equipped with conventional and advanced machine tools to meet diverse requirements of users and ensure timely execution of engineering jobs. The workshop undertakes the manufacturing of components and assemblies using various machining processes such as turning, milling, drilling, grinding, welding, sheet metal fabrication and water jet cutting. It caters to the requirements of scientific divisions, experimental facilities, maintenance groups and project activities by producing components as per engineering drawings and specifications.

Workshop
Activities

• Manufacturing and fabrication of mechanical systems, assemblies and precision components as per the approved job cards and user requirements.

• Process planning for machining, fabrication, inspection and providing design improvement suggestions.

• Scheduling of jobs and optimum allocation of manpower, machines and resources for timely execution.

• Procurement and inventory management of raw materials, tooling, consumables and machine spares.

• Mass production and supply of standard vacuum components such as CF flanges (Blank and Rotatable), KF flanges/connectors, centre rings and aluminium/PTFE gaskets.

• Development and fabrication of experimental setups, fixtures, and special-purpose components for scientific research activities.

• Maintenance, calibration and upkeep of workshop machinery and infrastructure to ensure reliable operation and quality output.

• Technical support for research, development, maintenance and experimental activities of IPR, FCIPT, and ITER-India users.

• Operation of six conventional lathe machines for precision turning and machining of cylindrical components.

• Machining operations using conventional milling, radial drilling and vertical drilling machines for fabrication of various engineering components.

• Precision machining using CNC Turning Machine and Vertical Machining Centre (VMC) for automated milling, drilling, tapping and complex machining operations based on CAD/CAM programs.

• Precision cutting of ferrous and non-ferrous materials using the Water Jet Cutting Machine without heat-affected zones, ensuring dimensional accuracy and preservation of material properties.

• Production of high-precision micro-holes in electrically conductive materials using the EDM Drill Machine, enhancing advanced machining capabilities.
