![]() Head, Outreach Division & Associate Professor (HBNI)
Dr. Ramasubramanian is a distinguished physicist with over two decades of global experience in experimental plasma physics and fusion technology. He assumed charge as the Head of the Outreach Division at the Institute for Plasma Research (IPR) in June 2025.
Academic Journey & International Expertise
Dr. Ramasubramanian earned his Ph.D. in Plasma Physics from IPR in 2001. Immediately following his doctoral studies, he moved to Germany to join the prestigious Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik (IPP-Garching). During his tenure in Germany, he played a vital role in divertor diagnostics for the Wendelstein W7-AS stellarator. His expertise was further utilized in the conceptual design phase of the world-leading W7-X diagnostics in Greifswald. Later, as part of the ASDEX-Upgrade group, he specialized in video and edge diagnostics, contributing to some of Europe’s most advanced magnetic confinement experiments.
Leadership at IPR
Returning to IPR in January 2005 as a Scientific Officer, Dr. Ramasubramanian has served the institute in several critical capacities:
ITER India: Responsible Officer for the design stage of the ITER CXRS-Pedestal diagnostics.
Section Head: Led the Multi-Cusp Plasma section, focusing on fundamental plasma phenomena.
Institutional Governance: Served as the Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) of the institute.
Academic Mentorship: As an Associate Professor at the Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), he has guided four doctoral students and numerous Master’s projects, contributing significantly to the next generation of Indian physicists.
Research & Outreach Vision: With over 45 research papers published in reputed international journals, Dr. Ramasubramanian remains active in the fields of Fusion Plasma Diagnostics and Divertor Plasma Physics.
In his current role as the Head of the Outreach Division, he is dedicated to bridging the gap between high-level nuclear fusion research and public understanding. His vision is to make plasma science accessible, inspiring students across India to explore careers in clean energy and advanced physics through structured institutional visits, interactive exhibits, and multilingual educational resources.
